Jawahar Lal Nehru
(Aug 15, 1947- May 27,1964)

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India.

Gulzari Lal Nanda
(May 27- Jun 9,1964) and (Jan 11 – Jan 24,1966)

He was the Acting Prime Minister of India for two 13-day tenures following the deaths of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964 and Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966 respectively. Both his terms ended after the ruling Indian National Congress’s parliamentary party elected a new prime minister.

Lal Bahadur Shastri
(Jun 9,1964 – Jan 11,1966)

In the war for independence, Shastri popularized the motto “Don’t Die, But Kill,” which sparked the fire of liberty across the countrymen.

Indira Gandhi
(Jan 24,1966 – Mar 24, 1977)
(Jan 14,1980 – Oct 31,1984)

She was the first women prime minister, an Indian politician and stateswoman who served as the 3rd prime minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.

Morarji Desai
(Mar 24,1977 – July 28,1979)

He is the oldest person to hold the office of prime minister, at the age of 81, in the history of Indian politics. He subsequently retired from all political posts, but continued to campaign for the Janata Party in 1980.

Chaudhary Charan Singh
(July 28,1979 – Jan 14,1980)

Singh is widely regarded as the “Champion of farmers
after his life has been dedicated to advocating for the wellbeing and rights of farmers

Rajiv Gandhi
Oct 31,1984 – Dec 2, 1989)

He took office after the assassination of his mother, then–primev minister Indira Gandhi, to become at the age of 40 the youngest Indian prime minister.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee
(Mar 19,1998 – May 13,2004)

was an Indian politician and poet who served three terms as the Prime Minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, then for a period of 13 months from 1998 to 1999, followed by a full term from 1999 to 2004. He was the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full term in the office.

Narendra Damodardas Modi
(May 26,2014 – till date)

Narendra Modi was re-elected as prime minister in 2019 with a bigger mandate than that of 2014. The BJP-led NDA winning 354 seats out of which BJP secured 303 seats.
